While some people grow up in nurturing environments filled with kindness, others encounter formidable challenges and heartbreak from a tender age. There are those who endure trials that no child should ever have to face.
Chris Tomlinson is an individual whose journey has been marked by adversity. Now a father of two, he has traversed a path laden with anguish and suffering. However, Chris possesses an unwavering faith that has been a beacon of hope amidst the storm of hardships he has faced.
Chris’s early life was forever altered by a tragic accident. As a toddler, he exhibited the natural curiosity common to young children. Before he even reached the age of two, Chris wandered away from his parents and entered a shed in his family’s backyard. In that moment of innocent exploration, he inadvertently knocked over a can of gasoline, covering himself with the flammable liquid. The situation escalated when the pilot light of a hot water heater ignited the gasoline, engulfing Chris in flames. The result was catastrophic; he suffered burns covering 98% of his body, an ordeal that brought unimaginable pain and suffering.

Rushed to the hospital, the prognosis was grim. Doctors informed his family that Chris had only a 1% chance of surviving the night. Yet, with his family by his side, this brave young boy defied the odds and pulled through, although his life would be irrevocably changed. The ensuing years saw Chris in and out of hospitals, undergoing more than 200 surgeries in an attempt to repair the damage to his body.
Despite the overwhelming challenges, Chris maintained a positive outlook on life. He has often expressed his belief that his resilience stemmed not solely from his strength but from his unwavering faith. He once said, “I always found the positivity in everything. I had this big old smile on my face because I knew God was with me… It wasn’t just by my own strength; it was God who was there for me the whole time.”
As he transitioned into adulthood, the trials continued to follow him. Medical professionals warned him that it was highly unlikely he would ever father children due to the severity of his injuries. Yet, Chris once again defied expectations by welcoming not just one but two daughters into his life. The challenges he faced were not only physical but emotional and social. The visible differences in his appearance, a constant reminder of his past, made securing stable employment particularly difficult. At times, this struggle even led Chris and his daughters to experience homelessness. Throughout these trying circumstances, however, his faith remained an unwavering constant.

Several years ago, Chris turned to the internet to share his story, not as a plea for sympathy or assistance, but to spark meaningful conversations about the treatment and perceptions of individuals with disabilities in society. The response he received was overwhelmingly positive and heartening. Many strangers reached out, offering support that helped lift Chris out of a dark period in his life.
Unfortunately, the trials were far from over. Shortly after he began to rebuild his life, his wife of 14 years decided to leave him and their daughters, thrusting Chris into the role of a single father and plunging him into a new realm of uncertainty and pain. Reflecting on this loss, he admitted, “It’s horrible. I’d rather be burned all over again than to experience that pain.”
Yet, amid this despair, Chris found a renewed sense of purpose. The sight of his daughters smiling and embracing him was a poignant reminder of why he had to keep fighting. “This is my purpose. This is what I need to do — they need me,” he realized.
A pivotal moment in Chris’s journey came during a funeral for a relative when he experienced a car accident that served as a wake-up call. This incident prompted him to move back to his hometown of Plant City, Florida, with the determination to raise his daughters in a familiar environment. Though he still encounters curious stares and is reminded of his differences due to the horrific accident of his childhood, he remains resolute in his belief that there is a divine plan for each of us.
Chris has taken it upon himself to share his journey, driven by a passion to illuminate the miraculous workings of faith. He emphasizes that miracles occur every day, urging others to open their eyes to the divine presence in their lives. “It’s a big passion of mine to get my story out there. Again, not for me but to bring the glory to God,” Chris articulates. “Because a lot of people think God’s not working anymore — God doesn’t do miracles. God does miracles every second, every day. All you got to do is look around you.”
