Following the accident, Nicole was rushed to Fort Sanders for evaluation. Fortunately, her injuries were relatively minor, though she was thoroughly checked, including undergoing a CT scan and X-rays. Lucas, however, sustained critical injuries and was taken to the Transplant Intensive Care Unit at UT Medical Center, where he was placed in a medically induced coma to aid his recovery. To stabilize his condition, doctors initially used a paralytic agent, later beginning the process of weaning him off it, although he remained sedated.
Nicole, though injured, stood by her husband through every difficult step, demonstrating strength in the face of unimaginable circumstances. Despite her own trauma, she was fully committed to supporting Lucas, holding hope for his recovery. Friends of the couple stepped in to assist, organizing a fundraiser to help cover the overwhelming medical expenses the Shoffners faced. The goal for the GoFundMe campaign was set at $100,000, and within a short time, contributions surpassed $93,000.
