The applicant, Nick Abbott, revealed in his submission that he also faced the challenge of being deaf. “Right off the bat, he said, ‘I’m deaf also, and I feel like we’d have a good connection,'” Powers recounted. From the moment Emerson arrived at the door, it was evident they shared an instant rapport. “He came straight to me at the door and sat right away at my feet and stayed there,” Abbott recalled, recognizing that the puppy seemed to choose him. That pivotal moment solidified their bond, assuring Abbott that they would be able to communicate and connect in a special way.
After officially adopting Emerson, Abbott began the rewarding journey of training his new companion. He employed sign language to teach the puppy various commands, including “sit,” “lie down,” and “stay.” Emerson quickly adapted, showcasing his intelligence and eagerness to learn.
